There are certain fan bases that get a bad wrap for not knowing a lot about their team. They go to the games strictly because it’s the hip thing to do or for some other reason outside of being a passionate fan. The two that quickly come to mind are the Chicago Cubs and Miami Heat fans. It’s been debated for years if the Cubs fans are real baseball fans. Many people in Chicago feel that the real baseball fans root for the White Sox and the people who follow the Cubs do it for reasons outside of baseball. They like the team colors or they like the scene around Wrigley Field and some crazy people actually enjoy the dumpy stadium.
I will never understand why people gravitate towards the Cubs. Why would anyone in their right mind want to follow a team that loses every year? Then I sat down and thought about it and realized that I will never understand because I’m mentally stable. Albert Einstein described insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Cubs fans have expected a title for over 100 years yet every year it doesn’t happen. Being a Cubs fan isn’t a choice it’s a mental disorder called Cubsitis. Many people with this disorder claim they knew from birth they liked watching the Cubs. The sad part is there’s no cure. Cubs fans will claim that they’re sick of watching this bad team every year. I can’t tell you how many friends I know who will claim after another loss that they’re never watching again, but they always keep watching.
I wanted to get more proof that this disorder exists. I wanted to find out if Cubs fans were even knowledgeable about their own team. I did a little research and found a website called Fanified.com. It’s a website where fans go to get certified on their favorite sports team, musical artist or TV show. Basically how it works is that you must first pass a 50 question certification test in order to post stories or comments on the website. This filters the users so you’re only able to talk to people who actually know what they’re talking about, imagine that.
I checked the stats of the Cubs certification test and noticed that currently only 42% of Cubs fans are passing. I don’t know about you but when I was in school that meant you had an “Fâ€. I thought maybe this was the norm for fans on the website so I checked around. Chicago Bears fans had a 67% passing rate, the Chicago Bulls fans had a 68% passing rate and even the Miami Heat fans had a better passing rate at 43%. Cubs are in dead last again.
This confirmed my assumption, Chicago Cubs fans keep following the team but they don’t care about the outcome or even care to remember anything about the team. Their disorder has taken over to the point that they’re numb about everything related to the team. They’re almost like zombies searching for brains, but instead they’re searching for titles that will never exist. The only way they cope is to focus on other less important things like the crowd and scene around Wrigley. Hopefully one day our top scientists can figure out a cure for this, until then it’s very important to understand the sad truth of why people love the Cubs.
